The project brief is possibly one of the most important management products in a projects lifecycle other than the Project Initiation Document which is often no more than a fleshed out version of the Brief.
In an MSP programme the Brief is the first document which gives life to the set-up of a new project. The document is compiled from the input of the following documents:-
- Programme Definition Document – Project Dossier Appendices, Organisational Structure, Stakeholder Profiles
- Programme Blueprint
- Programme Business Case
- Programme Plans - Programme Plan, Programme Communications, Quality Management Plan
- Programme Strategies – Quality Management Strategy, Monitoring and Control Strategy, Programme Information Management Strategy, Stakeholder Engagement Strategy, Risk & Issue Management Strategies
- Input from the Programme Risk Register and Issue Log.
It is easy to see from this document list why the Project Briefs main job is to make sure a project is aligned fully with a programmes objectives and its vision. Any changes to this document would normally require immediate escalation to the programme board in order to make sure the project is still valid and aligned with the programme objectives and vision for the future.
