Please click FREE Risk & Issue Log

These logs have been updated and improved as of 14/10/08 and now include an automatic risk & issue mitigation /resolution overdue date indicator. This means that for each risk /issue the sheet calculates how many days overdue from any given target resoltuion /mitgation date as compared with the current date. This kind of feature comes into its own when used in conjunction with our new Project Status Report due out later today IT Project Status Report.

These template logs contain some content from a real project so that you can get a feel for how to use them as part of an effective set of risk and issue management processes.

If you are wondering how to make risk and issue management work for you then I suggest you read the following How to make risk and issue management work ?

I recently carried out some searches via Google to see if I could find a high grade downloadable IT Project Status Report template. To my dismay all I could find were mostly one-page Word documents with a few headings, poor formats and little if any useful content. Many seemed a far cry from what I would call a ‘best practice’ template, capable of informing and impressing stakeholders.

A regular visitor to this site asked me for some help in obtaining an example of a good consultant’s Service Contract, which he could use to close a direct deal with a potential client.

So, here is a copy of the kind of personal service contract I use with UK clients and under UK legal jurisdiction. This contract has most, if not all, of the IR35 friendly clauses you would typically see in a standard PCG Contract, plus additional clauses covering payment of earned fees and the all important exit aspects of any consultancy contract.

Download available at the bottom of this post. This is a real life template used on engagments stripping out all the project specific references whilst keeping much of the content used in the original in order to give valuable insights into how to compile this important document.  I felt this would be better than using a more traditional PRINCE 2 Product Description Style Template. For an example of such a template please refer to post - FREE PRINCE 2 Product Description Template

The question I often get asked by IT Professionals some of whom are surprisingly PRINCE 2 accredited, is:-

What is a PRINCE 2 Product Description? To answer this question we need firstly to define what PRINCE 2 means by the term “Product”:-

Typically, a product is a self-contained project deliverable, which is either a document or a system (hardware/software)or component thereof.

The product description is, therefore, a description of a product intended to be produced and developed or obtained – even before it is planned – to ensure that the people involved in its production know:

• Why it is needed

• What it will look like

• From what sources it will be derived

• The Quality specification to which it must be built.

The Product Description is a control document. It is written as part of the planning process. It defines the deliverable, the standards to be used in its creation, and the quality criteria to be applied to ensure it is fit for purpose. Not only is this information essential for the Author, but the Product Description also forms the initial checklist for checking the quality of the finished product.
